2027 BMW X5 Prices, Specs and Australian Arrival Details

BMW’s fifth-generation X5 arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2026, opening with two mild-hybrid six-cylinder models priced from $143,900 before on-road costs. The petrol 40 xDrive costs $145,900, while the diesel 40d xDrive is the lower-priced launch option. Both bring larger displays and more standard comfort equipment; an electric iX5 and plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive are due in the first quarter of 2027, with prices still to come.

The new X5 is a substantial seller for BMW in Australia, so the timing and breadth of its powertrain range matter. BMW Australia delivered 3673 examples last year, making it the brand’s third-best-selling model behind the X1 and X3. Since the original arrived in 1999, more than 3.1 million X5s have been sold globally, including over 80,000 in Australia.

Launch prices and powertrains

The 40d xDrive’s $143,900 starting price is $4000 above the outgoing xDrive30d. The 40 xDrive is $2000 more than the xDrive40i it replaces, at $145,900. Both use a 3.0-litre inline-six and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive and a 48V mild-hybrid system. That system pairs a 0.9kWh battery with a 13kW/200Nm electric motor.

Compared with their predecessors, the diesel gains 20kW and 20Nm, while the petrol model adds 14kW and 20Nm. The petrol version has the quicker claimed sprint time, but the diesel produces more torque. Fuel consumption for the 40d has not yet been supplied, leaving buyers without a direct efficiency comparison between the two launch models.

Both versions are rated to tow up to 3000kg with a braked trailer. BMW lists a separate tow-hitch preparation option that raises the braked towing capacity to 3500kg; it costs $2500. That distinction matters for buyers matching the vehicle to a trailer, as the higher figure depends on the specified preparation.

Cabin technology and standard equipment

BMW is bringing its Neue Klasse design language to the X5, following its use on the iX3 and i3. The exterior adopts taller, narrower kidney grilles and a more substantial overall look. Inside, BMW Panoramic Vision places a display across the base of the windscreen, while a conventional head-up display remains. The central infotainment touchscreen grows from 14.9 inches to 17.9 inches, and the front passenger gets a separate screen.

Both launch models share the same standard equipment list. Highlights include 21-inch alloy wheels, the M Sport package, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, adaptive M suspension, a panoramic sunroof, a power tailgate and soft-close doors. The cabin also gets power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, massage and memory functions, plus a heated Sports steering wheel.

Other standard features include a space-saver spare wheel, Comfort Access with Digital Key Plus, Parking Assistant Professional, wireless phone charging, DAB+ digital radio and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Upholstery is Veganza leatherette, and BMW Digital Premium is included with a three-year subscription.

Space, dimensions and options

The X5 measures 4998mm long, 2000mm wide excluding mirrors and 1751mm tall, with a 3035mm wheelbase. Width including mirrors is 2216mm. Boot capacity is 655 litres with the rear seats in place and 1850 litres when they’re folded, giving the large SUV a useful mix of passenger and cargo space on paper.

Several packages let buyers add comfort or visual changes. The $3600 M Sport Pro package includes M seatbelts and steering wheel, revised brake calipers, a darkened glass kidney grille and high-gloss black exterior details. The $2300 Comfort Package adds heated front and centre-console armrests, heated rear seats, four-zone climate control and rear roller sunblinds.

Standalone choices include adaptive air suspension and rear-axle steering as part of Adaptive Chassis Control for $7000. Wheel upgrades range from $2700 for 22-inch aerodynamic wheels when ordered with M Sport Pro to $5400 for 23-inch alloys. Automatic doors cost $2500 and replace the standard soft-close doors. BMW Individual leather upholstery costs $8300, while Clear&Bold polished glass cabin controls and a slate centre-console surround cost $1900.

Running costs, safety and availability

BMW Australia provides a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Service pricing for the new X5 has not been announced, so scheduled maintenance costs remain an open part of the ownership picture. The petrol model’s claimed fuel use is 8.6-9.3L/100km; the diesel figure is still to be confirmed.

The X5 has not yet been assessed by ANCAP or Euro NCAP. Listed standard safety and driver-assistance equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop/go, autonomous emergency braking, automatic speed limit assist and lane-centring through Steering and Lane Control Assistant. A surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and tyre pressure monitoring are also included.

Alpine White is the standard exterior finish. Metallic paint choices cost an additional $2000, while BMW Individual Tanzanite Blue costs $4000. Interior colour choices include Black, Copper Brown and Silverstone II; BMW Individual options add Black, Vintage Coffee, Smoke White, Adelaide Grey and Tartufo for $8300.

With petrol and diesel versions scheduled for October to December 2026, the immediate choice is between the petrol model’s higher power and quicker claimed acceleration and the diesel’s greater torque and lower entry price. The electric iX5 and plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive are expected in early 2027, but their pricing and detailed specifications will determine how they fit alongside these first arrivals.
